Luke Fleurs, 24, Killed in Hijacking

The South African football fraternity are in mourning following the tragic death of Kaizer Chiefs centre-back, Luke Fleurs.

On Wednesday night, 3 April, Fleurs was hijacked by two male gunmen at a petrol station in the Florida suburb of Johannesburg, Gauteng. One of the gunmen shot him in the chest before they fled in Fleurs’ vehicle.

The 24-year-old was taken to a local hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.

Debuting at Ubuntu Cape Town in 2017, Fleurs joined SuperSport United a year later. In October 2023, he signed a two-year deal with Amakhosi. He also represented South Africa as a member of the under-23 team at the 2020 Olympic Games.

When news of Fleurs’ death emerged, fans and football figures alike paid tribute to him.

“I am saddened that yet another life has been cut short due to violent crime,” tweeted Sports minister Zizi Kodwa on Thursday, 4 April. “My thoughts are with the Fleurs and Amakhosi family, and the entire South African football fraternity.”

Ubuntu executive director, Casey Prince, told a local soccer outlet on Thursday: “[Fleurs] was always relaxed and a lot of fun to be around. Everyone was drawn to him because of the aura he gave off … he was so easy to love because of who he was; the younger boys and the older boys, they all loved him.”

An investigation into Fleurs’ death is currently underway.
